Mining Brief - June 13, 2023

1) Arizona Metals Corp. has the potential to expand the historical Kay mine, which hasn't been mined in almost 70 years, based on the most recent drill results. With a drill hole measuring almost 35 feet had grades of 6.2% equivalent copper, composed of 2.4% copper, 3.25 g/T of gold, 6.1% zinc and 36.1 g/T of silver from a depth of 1267 feet. "The high-grade copper and gold drill results reported today continue to demonstrate the expansion potential of the Kay Mine deposit,” CEO Marc Pais said in the release. “Surface outcrop sampling at the Western target has returned significant grades of both copper and gold, extending the strike length of mineralization exposed at surface in this area to approximately 800 meters.” The Kay mine is located about 43 miles north of Pheonix and signed a letter of intention to acquire the property from Silver Spruce Resources.

2) Rio Tinto will invest $1.1 billion to expand its smelter at the Complexe Jonquiere in Quebec Canada, which will boost the annual capacity by about 160,000 metric tons. The Canadian government is involved in efforts to eliminate carbon emissions and Rio Tinto partnered with Alcoa developed its ELYSIS technology that eliminates all CO2 emissions and replaces it with oxygen. The Quebec government will provide up to $113 million in support for the expansion and wants to be the leader in greenhouse gas-free aluminum production. The construction of the expansion will take over 2.5 years and expected to start commissioning in the first half of 2026, with the smelter running at full capacity by the end of 2026. The construction will create up to 1,000 jobs at its peak, while the smelter will add 100 new permanent jobs.
